CHAPTER 21
RETRIEVAL
âSo did you ah, have a good trip then, old chap?â began Henry, almost apologetically.
âOld chap⦠old chap? You punched me! What the hell did you do that for?â
âNecessary evil, old boy. Needed some of your blood you see, to ah⦠get things moving.â Henry looked very uncomfortable and was still wringing his hands and bouncing on his toes as if he couldnât keep still.
Alex walked back to the sofa and slumped down into the soft leather seat. Tiredness washed over him in waves and in the warmth of Henryâs house, he realised just how cold he had been. He reached over the back of the sofa to pull a large, soft throw around him, before sinking back into the warm leather cushions.
âHave you any idea what Iâve been through tonight? What Iâve seen?â he said, still not looking at his granddad.
He hated to admit it to himself, but he suddenly felt very confused and more than a little scared. Henryâs hands finally parted and he stopped bouncing. Hitching up his trousers, he settled into the seat beside Alex.
âI feel like Iâm going mad with some of the things that have happened over the last couple of days, and Iâm still not sure whatâs going on. Frederik explained some but Iâ"
âI know, I know,â said Henry soothingly. âI donât understand everything myself, if Iâm completely honest with you. It is all so very strange, after all. But then I supposeâ¦"
âSuppose what?â Alex said after a few moments.
âHmm? Well, I suppose that Iâve had longer to get used to the idea than you, havenât I."
Alex didnât say anything. He was still going over things in his head, trying to rationalise everything he had seen and heard. Henry was once again rooting around in his jacket for his pipe which he pulled out and lit. The smell of the smoke comforted Alex somewhat and he felt himself begin to relax. After several minutes of Henry puffing on his pipe and with Alex finally starting to warm up, Henry finally spoke again.
âSo, first things first. What exactly did Frederik tell you?â
Alex paused before answering, thinking that his granddad sounded far too excited to hear this part, almost as if heâd been putting off asking Alex for fear of annoying him. But he supposed it wouldnât hurt to talk it through some more and maybe his granddad would be able to explain everything some more.
âWell, after we got past the initial pleasantries," Alex instinctively rubbed his neck, âhe told me the truth about that bit of story that you showed me in the library. He told me about all the books he and Annelise had written over the years, how theyâd cut out all the rubbish and just put the good stuff into these five super-books and that it had started to go a bit wrong from there really.â
Henry merely sucked on his pipe, so Alex carried on.
âThatâs when he said that Annelise had been killed by the shadow thing, so heâd burnt the five books.
